    9/11/01 - NEVER FORGET

My guess is it's in the back our all our minds..where were you when _______? I was at work - a new job...only 7 months (almost to the date)...learning the ropes when suddenly my life as I knew it stood still. I heard the news...the first plane. Then the 2nd. Then the Pentagon. And Pennsylvania. Somehow selling doors wasn't that big of a deal when I didn't know if my brother was buried in the rubble of the Pentagon. My sister in PA only lives 40 miles from the crash site. It could've happened in her back yard!

It was 6 L O N G hours before we finally got word from my sister - Steve was OK. When we FINALLY got in touch w/ him his first words were 'No, I didn't go the Pentagon. Today.' He worked at the Air National Guard HQ 2 blocks from the Pentagon & regularly - sometimes daily - would walk the underground tunnels connecting his office to the Pentagon. As my sister says, we experienced for 6 hours what families of the victims felt much longer than that....but their emptiness became permanent.

Regardless of what you think of the war....regardless of what you think about politics....thank a serviceman or servicewoman - not just today, but ANY day! I had the pleasure of being in the Atlanta airport last year and a large number of soldiers were on their way home for leave. What a wonderful opportunity to just say 'thank you' to as many as I could muster up the courage to interrupt. Their response was always a humble 'you're welcome' or a 'my pleasure - thank you.' Never a bad word or temperament or attitude. Only a brief touch with the 'realness' of one person for whom they lay their life on the line.

Never forget. Because they always remember why. And we should too.

  • A funny thing happened at the Ferret Show...

First, let me go on record...I do NOT own a ferret....nor do I desire to own one. Yes, they're cute with their little twitchy noses looking up at you and I imagine there's nothing like having them crawl all over you. Ah - I can just feel it - the claws digging in just a bit through a t-shirt. AHHHHHHHh......now THAT'S fun!

However, my sister and her roommate breed ferrets and show them. They have many champion ferrets and others on their way. It's a whole different subculture, THAT'S for sure!

This past Saturday they were in town from PA for the big Buckeye Ferret Show. We started going a few years ago when they first came to it and now it's an annual event in late August. It's a great opp to see my sister and for Mom & my bro to see them, too. And they come over for dinner on Friday night when they hit town.

So here I was sitting at their table late in the day Friday as things were winding down. I'm just sitting there minding my own business when suddenly this woman sits down in the chair next to me. She put her arm around me which quickly gained my attention. Now this community is a fun-loving social group so it wasn't out of the norm. She was a bit shorter than I was and full of energy. She had been the announcer all day.

"Sue Bowles?" she said with a curious look on her face as if to say 'I know something you don't know and I'm loving this.'

"Yes..." (I thought she was going to tell me I had won something - that someone had pointed me out to her).

"Do you know who I am?" (not really - only that this stranger is putting her arm around me and knows my name.....I'm wondering what's coming next)

    "No..."

She flashes her name tag which says Lara.

    "Lara McElwee!'

'NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'' I exclaim rather loudly as my family & friends look at me trying to figure out what on earth is going on.

We hugged and laughed and stood in amazement at meeting up after almost 15-16 years at a Ferret Show!

Lara was one of my RAs (Resident Assistants) at Ohio Wesleyan when I worked there in the early 90s. She was one of those staff members that you just really hit it off with. We'd sit & just talk - not about work or her floor or anything - but about life. We'd joke and laugh and she gave me much energy. She's one of those people that you always 'wonder what they're doing now.' Now I know!

It was a wonderful reunion and my family saw a small snapshot of a chapter of my life they perhaps hadn't seen. And Lara shared with them how I influenced her which was very humbling...how she tried to model her first job as a Residence Hall Director from things she saw me doing. How humbling. How encouraging.

Turns out she just lives west of Columbus - about 45 minutes away - so we're going to meet up in west Columbus for coffee & catching up sometime (hopefully soon).

It was a walk down memory lane and was so much fun! She gave me energy. I told her the pastel colored 'jams' (funny colored comfortable casual pants) she gave me as her 'Senior Will' are still worn & one of my favorite pairs of pants (her sorority had a Senior Will where they gave something away to someone - I was the recipient). She said she was glad to hear that.

So beware...you never know what surprises await you as you go about your day. You may just have a part of your past cross your path and God may give you a chance to actually see and hear how He's used you in someone else's life. He's like that -  He likes to surprise His kids and let them know He hears the secret questions of the heart.

  • I'm such a bad blogger...but I'm back!

OK - I apologize. I'm SUCH a bad blogger - 7 months between entries?! No tango mucho tiempo ahora (I don't have much time right now) but here's a quick blink to what I have to catch you up on:

    - I've been preoccupied for the last 5-6 months on a HUGE surprise party for Mom & Dad. We pulled it off on July 18-19th and we have pictures posted on photobucket. We actually pulled it off - with about 60-75 guests from across the country! So stayed tuned for that one!

    - I love our garden - we expanded it to help cut the veggie bill this winter. We have about 12 bags of frozen green beans and broccoli, tomatoes are just coming in so canning those will start hot & heavy next week, and our cucumbers are so abundant that we gave 8 away around the neighborhood, will start doing some canning of those, and will be setting up a sign at the edge of the road to sell them, too!]

    - still on crutches after 2-1/2 years but I'm in real shoes and walking about 75% of the time at work w/o the crutches (yet yesterday it just tanked on me so I was hugging peg & leg for the last 90 minutes of the day).

    - learning Spanish from a local family but they just moved to FL since the husband got transferred w/the Army so now I have to continue on my own - anyone want to help?

    - my pastor/friend of 16 years just moved west - the same week my tutor left...lots of friends leaving in a short period of time

And now I must get ready for work....but that's a quick snapshot of the last 7 months. So stay tuned....I promise I'll write more soon!

  • Work stinks (literally!)

People often say 'work stinks.' They're probably expressing frustration or dissatisfaction with something. But Friday morning that phrase took on a whole new meaning. Work stunk. LITERALLY!

When we walked in the door Friday morning we could immediately smell it in the foyer...something smelled like melting plastic. I asked the Controller (the first office inside the door) what smelled. He matter-of-factly said 'we had a fire last night.' Then he told me what happened and said 'we're very fortunate. The whole place could've gone up.'

I work at a wholesale distributor for entry doors, so in the back are thousands of steel and fiberglass door slabs, all kinds of prefinish material (paint and stain), and a boatload of wood products to make the door jambs. Maybe 1 or 2 things that could be considered flammable.

The day before (Thursday) the guys in back had 46 steel doors to cut down. The scrap from the cut downs are placed in a big dumpster next to the cutdown machine. So is the sawdust and other shop scrap. The steel scraps were still hot and about 6:30pm Thursday night they started the sawdust smoldering. Based on the security cameras it smoked a while and then you see this huge flashpot. This was one of the large dumpsters you see at construction sites and it was flaming the entire width and higher than the top of the dumpster. It looked like a huge bonfire! Because it was zero degrees outside and our alarm system is a heat detector, no alarms sounded. It burned out without sparking anything else. When the managers got in around 6:30am on Friday the entire warehouse was filled with smoke and it was smokey even up in the office area. The fire was in the BACK warehouse so it had to travel a considerable distance - through a walkway and another smaller inventory warehouse to get to the office area. It wreaked!

They had all the loading dock bays and any other exterior door or bay open to air the place out (production gets in an hour after the managers got there). They basically froze out Production for an hour. Even in the office we had the smoke feeling in our throats and had small headaches. I was going to eat lunch upstairs but went out for some fresh air - man, did I feel the difference! How the guys in back made it through the day I still don't know, other than they said 'you get used to it.' We all have a greater appreciation for firefighters!

It was an obvious opportunity to simply say 'Someone is looking out for us.' I told the President I was thankful for the protection & would continue to pray that God protects the Company.' He simply wrote back  'Thanks, Sue.'

We are thankful for His hand of protection. People said 'we were very fortunate.' I simply responded 'Someone was watching out for us.' It's a chance to plant seeds. May He bring the water to cause the growth.

  • Leaving on a Jet Plane

My Giggle Twin has left on a jet plane. Tammy was home for a month and left early this morning to return to the orphanage in Honduras where she's a volunteer. We got a chance to talk last week for 2 hours and it was 2 of the best hours! We picked up right where we left off. Kindred spirit friends do that. She 'understands' without me having to try to find feeble words to explain. She asks the tough questions to keep pushing me onward. We even talked a little in Spanish, which was great practice for me (my tutor told me last night she can tell I have a lot of Spanish in my mind - we're just working on getting it to click when I speak - that was encouraging).

I miss Tammy. There are few people these days who are deep friends - heart friends - REAL friends who speak the truth in love; who aren't afraid to reprove you; who are quick to encourage you; who are open with you about their heart's ups & downs; who expect the same from you that they give to you; who you can just 'be' with and not say a word and feel like you had the best time in the world. Tammy is that type of friend to me. And I miss her.

Next time she's back maybe, if she has the time, I'll take a flight to Atlanta (even for a weekend) to visit with her, meet her family, and just 'be' with her. I can always use a good Giggle.

She's following her heart, which is to follow God's will for her life. She does it well. She does it with grace. And she does it humbly. God is using her mightily down there, though the visual results are hard to find at times. Yet she knows that is where the Lord wants her - needs her - to be His hands and feet to those kids at the orphanage. And to do anything else, anywhere else, would be empty and hollow and unfulfilling. She is joyful because she is obeying the Lord. I'm thankful to have her in my life, too.

Dios te bendiga, mi amiga (God bless you, my friend).

About Me

  • I love the Lord, music, missions, and am trying to learn Spanish. I play acoustic guitar (have a Takamine 12 string), did theatre in high school & college, love sports, the best 5 summers of my life were spent in the Kanakuk K-2 Kitchen, and have some 'kids' thru Compassion International, whom I love VERY much. In fact my pic is the day I got to meet them in 2004. And I am a VERY proud sister of a retired Senior Master Sergeant in the US Air Force/Air Guard in Maryland: my bro Steve!

Thanks so much! I did get a quick email from her saying they had a lot of rain but were fine, and she commented it was 'weird' to get an email from Compassion saying she'd hear from them if there was a problem when she's living in the same country with her kids! Thanks so much for writing! I miss be

If you have not heard from Tammy, she is fine. They had some rain from Felix but that is about it. She and Kelly are on the way to Panama to get their Visas renewed - not sure what they would find if they followed Felix's path. Tammy's Mom
